Nature Hikes, Bird Watching & Wildlife Viewing

Halfmoon Lake Natural Area is located approximately 45 minutes north of Edmonton. As you walk along the trails, you will be surrounded by a variety of landscapes: from  a jackpine forest to an aspen forest to a semi-arid plain; or you can also enjoy a small hike off the main trail which leads to a lake.  Within these landscapes,  you may encounter deer, moose, coyotes, and a variety of birds.  While hiking, don't forget to stop and try some of the wild berries along the way.

Enjoy a day of hiking either at Holmes Crossing Sandhills Ecological Reserve or at Fort Assinboine Sandhills Wildland Park Both of these areas are located
approximately 2 hours northwest of Edmonton.  As you take a hike in any one of these two areas, you will be able to unwind and enjoy the peace and quiet it offers.  You will also come to understand why precious areas such as these are protected.  These areas offer many opportunities to spot different wildlife, such as: moose, deer, great gray owls, sandhill cranes, just to name few.

Saddle up and experience life on the trail at Horse Creek Ranch, this cozy guest ranch is nestled between the majestic Athabasca River and picturesque Fort Assinboine Sandhills Wildland Park.

Muskeg Creek Trails has over 17 km of trails that wind their way through the Muskeg Creek Valley, accessible from either the chalet near Landing Trail Intermediate School, or from Athabasca University.  From spring through autumn, the trails are ideal for walking, jogging or bird-watching.  In winter, the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing.
